Creating Safer Campuses Through Better Reporting

Sexual harassment and assault remain significantly underreported across Australian universities.

Many students are unaware of how to report an incident or access support. Others choose not to report because they fear negative consequences, lack confidence in institutional processes, or wish to remain anonymous.

Without trusted reporting systems and reliable data, universities cannot fully understand the prevalence of gender-based violence or implement effective prevention and response strategies.

Respect on Campus helps close this gap by making reporting accessible, transparent, and trauma-informed while giving universities the information they need to improve student safety.

Student-Centred. Trauma-Informed. Purpose-Built.

Respect on Campus has been designed around the needs of students and staff who experience or witness sexual harassment, sexual assault, and other forms of gender-based violence.

The platform enables individuals to:

  • Safely disclose incidents in a secure environment
  • Report anonymously where appropriate
  • Choose what support they receive, when they receive it, and how they engage
  • Access timely referrals and follow-up services
  • Remain informed throughout the reporting process

Better Data. Better Decisions.

Accurate reporting is the foundation of meaningful change.

Gender-based violence remains significantly underreported within higher education, making it difficult for institutions to understand the true scale of the issue.

While reporting obligations continue to evolve under Australia’s Higher Education Gender-Based Violence framework, inconsistencies in reporting practices can limit the usefulness of sector-wide data.

Respect on Campus enables institutions to collect high-quality, consistent information while supporting seamless reporting to the Gender-Based Violence Regulator.

The result is reliable data that helps universities:

  • Identify emerging trends
  • Strengthen prevention initiatives
  • Improve student support services
  • Inform strategic decision-making
  • Demonstrate regulatory compliance

The Evidence

National Student Safety Survey (2021)

National Tertiary Education Union Staff Survey (2023)

The findings demonstrate why accessible reporting systems are critical.

  • 1 in 3 students experienced sexual harassment since starting university.
  • 1 in 20 students experienced sexual assault since commencing university.
  • Approximately 50% of students had little or no knowledge of how to report an incident or access support.
  • Fewer than 3% of students who experienced sexual harassment made a formal complaint to their institution.

Gender-based violence also impacts university staff.

  • 1 in 3 respondents reported experiencing workplace sexual harassment.
  • Only 13% made a formal complaint.
  • 46% chose not to report.
  • More than half reported being discouraged from proceeding with their complaint or experiencing negative consequences after reporting.

These findings highlight the importance of trusted, confidential reporting pathways for both students and staff.

Why Universities Choose Respect on Campus

Those Most at Risk

Universities are experts in education.

Responding to sexual harassment and sexual assault requires specialised systems that balance student wellbeing, procedural fairness, risk management, and compliance.

Respect on Campus brings these capabilities together in one secure platform, enabling institutions to deliver compassionate support while maintaining strong governance and accountability.

Research indicates that gender-based violence disproportionately affects:

  • Women
  • Students aged 18–21
  • LGBTQIA+ students
  • Students living with disability
  • Students residing in university accommodation
  • First Nations students
  • Students from multicultural backgrounds

Respect on Campus has been designed to provide equitable, accessible support for every member of the university community.
